Chicago El by night

Taking photos in Chicago is a bit nerve-wracking. I haven't entirely figured out yet where the good areas are and where the bad areas are and where people won't give a damn if I take pictures and where the Chicago natives will eviscerate me for being a tourist with a camera--or just steal the camera.

When I saw this, I had a couple friends watch my back while I grabbed my camera out of my bookbag and snapped a couple long-exposures. If I'd been alone, I probably would've just admired the scene for a couple seconds and continued on my way.

I kind of miss suburbia.

Suburbia kinda misses you too. ;)

Lovely picture. The glow of the platforms looks almost otherworldly. I'm glad you had friends around for this. Did you use the Gorillapod or just steady hands and railing?

Steady hands for a 4-second exposure? Yes, I'm that awesome.

...No, I put the camera on a railing and let it sit. :)

gorillapod?... did you buy one?!?... how is it?...

Nooooo, I still haven't gotten one.

I still love the name, though, and every time I see them in catalogues (they're quite common now), I giggle a little.

i can picture you chuckling... but not giggling...

I'm not proud of it.

I've tried for years to cultivate my giggle into a chuckle.

It hasn't worked.

Well I can say honestly that for the most of the population, the people won't mind you taking photographs at all. It's the security guards who have nothing better to do that will. However, the worst they do is just yell out "Hey! Don't take a picture".

Though yeah, safe neighborhood or not is another story. I guess just ask around at that point but certainly my rule is if I'm alone at night, nearly anywhere, I admire the shot and walk away. I'm glad you didn't in this case though, lucky for us you had friends there. It's a beautiful scene.

mighty fine, ms j. this is one of my favorites, colors being fantastic and all.

btw, gorillapod is pretty flippin sweet. good for attaching to a fence post for those decaying barn shots you always wanted. haha.

This is great. It's just the kind of composition I like, which probably makes it boring.

I've only been to Chicago once, so I don't know about safety concerns. If it were me, I'd probably just take the shot, but I'm a little more physically imposing than you are.

I don't like the "boring" end of my prior comment. What was meant to be a shot at my rather mundane taste in photos comes off as a shot at you. Rest assured that I think this photo is really good and anything but boring. Whether I am boring is still an open question.

Great shot. This my hometown. I take shots of some of the scarier parts of Chicago. I just don't ever get out of the car or really watch my back.
